Description

Original German WWII M40 Heer Tropical Camouflaged Helmet Shell ET64- This M40 helmet, produced by Eisenhutten Thale, is sized 64 and features a unique desert tan camouflage paint with a fine sand mixture applied over the factory dark field gray paint. Approximately 65% of the tan camouflage remains, including a hand-painted palm tree motif, though the swastika has been removed. While the wartime origin of the palm tree design is uncertain, the paint shows appropriate aging, scratches, and cracking.

The helmet retains its original reinforced aluminum liner band, dated 1941 and marked for size 64/56. The leather liner and chinstrap are missing, likely removed post-war. The split pins are intact, matching, and stamped with a maker’s mark, dated 1942.
The helmet's interior retains its dark field gray paint, albeit with rust spots scattered throughout. On the inner skirt, the number "407" is visible, along with a German soldier's rank and last name, hand-painted in white. This piece would make an excellent restoration project and provides an opportunity to research the history of the soldier who wore it. Overall, the helmet is in very good condition, given its age and service history.
