Original Third Reich Early SA Dagger With Partial Ground Röhm Unknown Maker With Hanger-
This is an original early-production German WWII Sturmabteilung (SA) dagger, featuring the partially ground Röhm dedication on the reverse of the blade. Early SA daggers bearing Ernst Röhm’s name and dedication were distributed to members of the SA prior to 1934. After Röhm’s execution during the “Night of the Long Knives” and his subsequent disgrace, existing daggers were officially ordered to have his name removed. This example displays that exact period modification.
The blade retains its deeply etched motto “Alles für Deutschland” on the obverse, with some surface age wear and minor gray toning. The reverse shows clear traces of the partially removed Ernst Röhm inscription, with good amount of the dedication still visible, but with his name removed. During this process, the maker’s name and logo were also removed, as they were positioned near Röhm’s name, leaving the blade without any remaining manufacturer markings.
The crossguards are nickel-silver, with the lower guard stamped “He” (Hessen), identifying the Gau district of issue. The grip is a beautiful early hardwood with rich reddish-brown tone, showing only light wear and no cracks. The inlaid SA roundel and nickel eagle both remain tight and well-detailed. The pommel nut does have some scrapes from someone using pliers to loosen it and most likely take it apart, but put back together.
The scabbard is the early anodized brown type with nickel-silver fittings, showing a deep, untouched patina with typical surface age. The fitting screws are untouched and not turned. It remains complete with its original short hanger, featuring a leather strap with intact buckle and clip, exhibiting age but still pliable.
Overall, this is a fine and fully original example of an early SA dagger showing the historically significant partially ground Röhm inscription and removed maker’s mark. A textbook example of a dagger altered under official directives following Röhm’s downfall.
