Original German WWII M40 Fieldgray Coastal Artillery NCO Greatcoat (Mantel)-
This is an authentic German WWII M40 Fieldgray Greatcoat (Mantel), worn by a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) of the Kriegsmarine Coastal Artillery (Marine-Artillerie). These coats were issued to naval personnel serving in coastal defense batteries and harbor protection units stationed along the Atlantic Wall and occupied Europe.
Constructed from high-quality fieldgray wool, this greatcoat features the regulation ten-button double-breasted front, fold-back cuffs, and the classic rear half-belt with two buttons. The collar is fieldgray wool, typical of early- to mid-war production.
The coat is fitted with a pair of original Kriegsmarine NCO shoulder boards, piped in silver Tresse and mounted on dark green wool underlay, indicating Coastal Artillery service. The boards are sewn directly into the shoulder seams, a correct wartime practice. One of the shoulder boards shows water damage and discoloration from long-term storage and improper storage and is missing the shoulder board button. All buttons are the correct Kriegsmarine anchor type, fieldgray-painted, and appear to be originally sewn to the coat.
Inside, the cotton twill lining remains intact and displays size and depot markings, though partially faded from wear. The greatcoat exhibits light service wear, including scattered small holes, light mothing, and minor age stains, particularly around the upper chest and lower skirt areas.
An honest and untouched example of a Coastal Artillery NCO’s M40 greatcoat, showing excellent original character and all the correct wartime construction details. These Kriegsmarine fieldgray examples are considerably rarer than standard Heer-issued coats. Overall in good to very good condition.
