Unissued Original German WWII Feldgendarmerie Gorget with Chain (Heer And Waffen SS)
This is an original unissued German WWII Feldgendarmerie (Military Police) Gorget, worn by members of the Feldgendarmerie, the military police branch of the German Army (Heer). These gorgets were worn around the neck while on duty to signify authority and were one of the most recognizable symbols of the wartime German military police.
Constructed of magnetic steel with its original silver-gray painted finish, the gorget features a raised Heer-style eagle with spread wings and clutching a swastika, positioned above a black pebbled scroll with the word “Feldgendarmerie” in raised cream letters. The two domed circular bosses at the upper corners are painted in a yellow tone typical of Army issue. Both bosses, the eagle, and the lettering were coated with phosphorescent paint, designed to glow in the dark for nighttime visibility and this example still retains that functionality. Some minor rust near the domed bosses on the edge.
The original steel two-piece link chain remains fully intact and attached, showing only some very minor oxidation and light rust spots consistent with age. The reverse retains its brown pressed-fiber backing with both flat aluminum retaining clips present and secure. The backing shows only light wear with no damage or repairs.
Overall, this is a very fine, complete unissued wartime example of the Heer Feldgendarmerie gorget, showing honest age, strong paint retention, and fully functioning luminous elements.
A classic and highly sought-after Feldgendarmerie gorget representing the feared “Kettenhunde” (chain dogs) of the German Army field police in near mint to excellent condition.
