Original German WWII Luftschutz Gladiator Helmet Size 57
This Luftschutz helmet is an authentic artifact from World War II, finished in the characteristic dark blue paint associated with German civil defense helmets.
EXTERIOR
Shell:
The three-piece “Gladiator” style shell retains much of its original dark blue factory paint. The finish shows scattered scratches, chips, and areas of surface wear typical of service use. Small areas of oxidation and visible red primer appear where the topcoat has worn away, particularly along the crown and edges. The front Luftschutz winged decal remains bright and clearly defined, with approximately 95% of the design intact despite minor abrasions. The characteristic ventilation holes on each side remain clean and well defined. The rear of the helmet displays hand-painted markings reading “G.S.F. 31”, likely indicating a civil defense unit or inventory designation.
INTERIOR
Shell:
The interior retains much of its original dark blue paint with light age toning and scattered wear. The rear interior rim is clearly stamped RL2-39/42, the standard Reichsluftfahrtministerium approval marking for Luftschutz equipment produced during the war.
Liner:
The original leather liner remains complete and in very good condition. All liner fingers are present and remain relatively supple, showing only light dryness and age toning. The leather has developed an attractive patina consistent with age and use. The original drawstring is no longer present.
Chinstrap:
The original chinstrap remains attached but is broken. The surviving section with buckle is still present, though the leather shows cracking and wear from age. Despite the damage, the strap remains an original component of the helmet.
CONDITION
Overall, this WWII Luftschutz Gladiator helmet remains in very good condition. It retains the majority of its original dark blue factory finish, a highly intact Luftschutz decal, original liner, and remnants of the chinstrap. The hand-painted rear marking adds additional character and potential historical interest. Honest wear consistent with wartime service enhances its authenticity, making it a desirable and visually appealing example of a German WWII civil defense helmet.
