Rare Original German WWII Luftwaffe Steel Belt Buckle “Crank Catch” Variant Marked CTD 1942 (Christian Theodor Dicke)
Offered is a scarce and highly desirable original German WWII Luftwaffe enlisted/NCO belt buckle manufactured by Christian Theodor Dicke (C.T.D.), Lüdenscheid, and dated 1942. This example represents the rarer “crank catch” variant, and less commonly encountered configuration that is sought after by advanced collectors.
Constructed of stamped steel, the buckle retains much of its original blue-gray Luftwaffe factory finish, now showing honest age, oxidation, and surface rust consistent with long-term storage and field use. The obverse features the classic Luftwaffe eagle in flight clutching a swastika, set against a finely pebbled field and surrounded by a detailed oak-leaf wreath. The die work remains sharp, with strong definition still visible throughout despite the worn finish.
The reverse clearly displays the stamped maker and date “C.T.D. 1942,” confirming production by Christian Theodor Dicke. The hallmark feature of this piece is its crank-style catch system, an uncommon variant differing from the standard prong/catch configuration and indicative of wartime production variation. The catch assembly remains intact and functional, showing matching age and patina.
Condition is very good overall for a steel Luftwaffe buckle of this type. The piece exhibits honest wear, oxidation, and areas of finish loss, but retains excellent character and untouched originality. No repairs or alterations are noted.
A rare variant Luftwaffe buckle that would make an outstanding addition to any advanced German belt buckle collection, particularly for those specializing in maker or variant types.
