Original German WWI Black Wound Badge (1918 Pattern – Unmarked)
This is an original German WW I Wound Badge in Black (Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz), instituted on March 3, 1918, by Kaiser Wilhelm II to recognize soldiers wounded in action. Wound badges were awarded in three grades: The first grade, the Black Wound Badge was awarded for 1 to 2 wounds received in combat. The Silver Grade was awarded for 3 to 4 wounds, and finally the Gold Grade for 5 or more wounds, total disability, or death.
Constructed of die-stamped steel, this example retains much of its original black painted finish. The obverse features a raised M16-style steel helmet over crossed swords, set against a finely pebbled background and surrounded by an oak leaf wreath tied with a bow at the base. Light surface oxidation is present where the original finish has thinned, giving the badge an attractive, honest patina.
The reverse retains its original hinge, pin, and catch assembly, all intact and fully functional. It remains unmarked, as is typical of wartime production. Due to age, pinback badges of this period should always be handled with care. Overall, this is in very good condition.
