Original Imperial Japanese WWII Army Type 90 Combat Helmet With Cut Chinstrap And Type 98 Canteen

This is a completely original Imperial Japanese Army Type 90 combat helmet, a classic piece of WWII Pacific Theater field gear. The helmet displays honest combat wear, untouched patina, and retains its full original liner system. A original Japanese Army Type 98 canteen accompanies the helmet, making this a desirable, untouched bring-back set.

Helmet Exterior

The exterior retains its original wartime brown paint, showing heavy field wear, scratches, oxidation, and age toning from decades of exposure. Large areas of the paint have thinned or worn down to the steel, giving it a textbook “been there” look. The front star insignia is missing, a common feature on helmets used in field conditions or stripped after the war.

The shell shows multiple shades of brown finish and darkened areas of patina. Vent holes, rivet positions, and overall profile are correct Type 90 features. No major dents or cracks, just the expected signs of prolonged service life.

Helmet Interior

The interior retains its complete three-pad leather liner system. The pads show classic age wear, stiffness, and cracking, with their original tie cords still in place. There are no pads in the inside pad pockets. The liner band has darkened from decades of use and storage.

The cloth chinstrap is present but cut, which is frequently found on battlefield-recovered Japanese helmets. The strap shows fraying and discoloration throughout.

Along the interior skirt are hand-painted red kanji characters, likely indicating the soldier’s name. These remain partially legible and add excellent character and personalization to the helmet. A soldier’s name written in abbreviated form, likely something similar to: 実木 (Jitsuki / Minoru-ki) or 木実 (Kimi / Kimitsu). The wear makes it impossible to identify the exact historical name. The important part is: They are personal name markings and not unit designations. These were almost always painted in red by the soldier himself before deployment. Stamped with a diamond-‘S’ Kobe Seiko maker mark and the Large size stamp ‘大,’ both classic Type 90 identifiers confirming originality.

A portion of an old postwar collection (“Vickers… Massachusetts”) remains attached inside the front of the shell, offering a glimpse into the helmet’s early bring-back provenance.

Canteen

Included with the helmet is an original Imperial Japanese Army aluminum Type 98 canteen. The canteen exhibits heavy paint loss from hard field use, with much of the brown wartime finish worn down to bare aluminum across both sides. The canteen is missing it's carrying harness.

The canteen retains its original aluminum cap and cork stopper, which shows typical deterioration but remains intact. The original string retention lanyard is still present on the cap.

On the bottom of the canteen is a stamped marking:

◇ ”八

This translates to “Type 98”, designating the standard Army issue canteen introduced in 1938. The diamond-shaped stamp (◇) above the characters is an arsenal inspector’s mark, most commonly associated with the Osaka Army Arsenal or a contracted manufacturer under Osaka supervision. A textbook, untouched example of a Japanese Type 98 canteen with correct markings.

Overall

A solid, 100% original Imperial Japanese Type 90 combat helmet with its complete liner, cut chinstrap, personalized kanji markings, and a matching Type 98 canteen bearing its correct arsenal and model markings. A fantastic, untouched WWII Japanese grouping, perfect for any Pacific Theater collection.
