Original Imperial Japanese WWII Army Type 90 Combat Helmet With Cut Chinstrap

This is an original Imperial Japanese Army Type 90 combat helmet, the standard steel helmet issued to Japanese soldiers throughout the Second World War. This example shows classic field wear, untouched patina, and all the characteristics collectors expect from an authentic wartime piece.

Helmet Exterior

The helmet retains its original wartime brown/tan paint, showing extensive field wear with the expected scrapes, oxidation, and patina from long service. The paint shows the typical multi-tone aging found on helmets exposed to tropical and harsh environmental conditions.
The original metal star insignia is present on the front, correctly shaped, properly affixed, and showing matching age and finish to the rest of the helmet. The shell remains structurally sound with no cracks or repairs. Ventilation holes and rivets are all intact.

Helmet Interior

The interior features the complete original three pad leather liner, which shows honest combat wear and age toning. The leather is slightly pliable and a little stiff, but worn, with period stitching and the original cotton suspension cords still present.
Rear part of the liner has slightly separated. The front pad is missing, but the other tow pads are inside the pockets. The cloth chinstrap is present but cut, which is frequently found on battlefield-recovered Japanese helmets. The strap shows fraying and discoloration throughout. The cut ends show matching age and fiber degradation, confirming it was done long ago rather than post-war.

White Painted Marking (Back Edge)

The white painted symbol inside the helmet is a hand-applied Japanese inspection or unit/ownership marking, commonly seen on Type 90 helmets. These markings typically indicated:

  • Rack number or soldier number,
  • Company/Platoon equipment number,
  • Or a small depot-inspection symbol applied at a regimental or battalion level.

The style, a simple, vertical, abstract three-stroke form, is consistent with Japanese kanban-style equipment numbering, not a kanji character. These were never standardized, so variations are expected, making this marking typical for field-issued Japanese helmets.
Stamped with a diamond ‘S’ Kobe Seiko maker marking on the rear edge, classic Type 90 identifiers confirming originality.

Overall Condition

This helmet is a textbook example of a combat used IJA Type 90, with strong, unquestionable originality. The untouched paint, original liner assembly, and field-modified chinstrap make it a desirable piece for any WWII Japanese militaria collection. A solid, unmessed with, real-deal Type 90 with great character in very good condition.
