Original German WWII Luftwaffe Squadron Clasp For Bomber Pilots In Gold With Bronze Case-
(Frontflugspange für Kampf- und Sturzkampfflieger in Gold)The gold clasp is constructed from gilded zinc, featuring an obverse design of a central circular laurel leaf wreath, joined at the bottom by a swastika, and surrounding a winged bomb crafted in silvered tombak. The wreath is flanked by nine oak leaves on each side. The reverse showcases a single rivet securing the winged bomb in position, with a crimped barrel hinge, a tapering horizontal pinback, and a flat wire catch with a crimped base. The clasp is maker-marked “R.S.S.” for Richard Simm & Söhne of Gablonz.
This piece is accompanied by its original presentation case, constructed of pressed card stock with a faux dark blue leather exterior. The lid bears a gilt inscription, “Frontflugspange für Kampfflieger bronze.” The interior features a white rayon lid liner, an intact hinge cover, and a slotted beige felt medal bed. The case closes with a functional metal spring catch and an exterior stud release. However, the case has sustained damage, having been compressed at some point, which prevents it from closing fully.
Interestingly, the clasp and case do not match (gold clasp with a bronze case), but they were brought back together by a U.S. 101st Airborne veteran and are being preserved in this configuration for historical purposes.
The clasp remains in excellent condition, with the gilding intact and minimal signs of wear. The case is in very good condition despite its noted damage. This is a highly collectible and intriguing piece of Luftwaffe history.
