Rare Original Transitional SS Dagger RZM 1163/38 SS By F. & A. Helbig
This is a rare and highly desirable transitional SS dagger, representing a Model 1933 Schutzstaffel Dienstdolch, manufactured by F. & A. Helbig of Steinbach. Helbig was assigned the RZM code 1163/38 SS in 1938, and this example notably displays both the earlier full maker mark and the later RZM code—clearly identifying it as a true transitional piece.
Blade:
The blade is in near mint condition and retains full original crossgraining throughout, which remains vivid and highly attractive. There are only very slight, typical runner marks present on both sides, along with minor areas of light graying near the lower portion of the blade and around the maker markings. The acid-etched motto, “Meine Ehre Heißt Treue,” is present and, as is characteristic of Helbig production, is lightly executed. The ricasso bears the “Gebr. F. & A. Helbig, Steinbach Kr. M.” maker mark along with the RZM code, both displaying the softer strike commonly associated with this maker.
A very slight gap is present where the blade meets the lower crossguard, another known and accepted trait seen on Helbig daggers.
Grip & Fittings:
The dagger features a beautiful black-dyed hardwood grip that remains in excellent condition, showing a tight fit and strong visual appeal. The aluminum SS eagle is well-defined and positioned slightly higher on the grip, a textbook Helbig characteristic. The SS roundel retains approximately 99% of its enamel and is perfectly seated.
The crossguards are the desirable “fat” style, constructed of steel with heavy plating, again consistent with Helbig production. The fittings exhibit a pleasing tone with strong original finish remaining.
Scabbard:
The dagger is complete with its original scabbard, which is steel-based and finished in glossy black enamel. The scabbard is in outstanding condition, remaining completely free of dents and retaining approximately 99% of its original paint with some minor scrapes.
The scabbard fittings are also steel with heavy plating, which still shows a beautiful original luster. All four screws are intact and appear untouched. The ball tip remains perfectly round, and the suspension ring is present.
Condition:
This is an exceptional, untouched and rare transitional Helbig SS dagger, combining desirable manufacturing traits with outstanding condition. With its dual markings, textbook characteristics, and excellent preservation, this piece offers strong collector appeal and is a standout example within any advanced edged weapons collection.
