Original US WWII Black Enameled Canteen Dated 1942-
Early in WWII, aluminum was urgently needed for aircraft. Therefore, in 1942 stainless steel canteens were replaced with stainless steel, plastic, and a lower grade metal with a porcelain coating. The result was the M1942 Black Porcelain Enamel Canteen. These types of canteens were not successful. The enamel coating inside the canteen would chip easily and contaminate the water. They were soon removed from service and replaced with standard aluminum.
This original 1942-dated canteen remains in excellent condition, with minimal chipping on the exterior. The bottom is clearly marked "U.S. REP 1942". The cup and cover are not included, and it is missing the cork gasket inside the cap.
