Original US WWII Foldex Map of Europe (Air) Dated December 1944 War Office Issue
An original late-war Foldex “Code AF” map of Europe, dated December 1944 and produced under the Directorate of Military Survey, War Office. These specialized maps were designed for practical wartime use, particularly for navigation and route planning, utilizing the innovative Foldex system which allows sections to be opened and viewed without fully unfolding the entire map.
The map is marked “Europe (Air) 1:500,000”, indicating its intended use for aerial navigation and strategic overview during the final stages of WWII. The Foldex format allows the user to flip between sections like pages, making it highly functional for field or operational use.
The interior retains its original printed instructions on how to use the Foldex system, along with patent and licensing information. The map itself shows detailed road networks, cities, terrain, and infrastructure across Europe, printed in multi-color for clarity and ease of use.
Condition is very good overall for a field-used paper item. The outer covers show typical age, handling wear, and light staining. The map sections remain intact with no major damage, though there is expected wear along fold lines from use. The piece remains complete and fully functional as intended.
A scarce and highly interesting WWII mapping piece, representing the type of practical navigation tools used during the war. Displays well and is an excellent addition for collectors of WWII maps, documents, or military field equipment.
