Original Waffen SS Handschar Burgundy Red Fez Size 56
An original German WWII Waffen SS Handschar Division burgundy red fez constructed of high quality wool felt with the classic cylindrical form associated with the Bosnian Muslim volunteer formations of the Waffen-SS. The maroon fez was worn by EM (Enlisted Men) of the SS “Handschar” mountain division as headgear with the dress uniform. There were two versions of the fez: a fieldgray model intended for combat and duty wear, and the maroon version worn for parades, marching exercises, and off-duty use.
The front retains its original machine woven BeVo-style Waffen SS Eagle and Totenkopf insignia, both neatly machine stitched applied and exhibiting attractive age toning throughout. Also present is the original black tassel affixed to the crown, which remains fully intact and displays very good preservation.
The rich burgundy wool body remains vibrant overall and retains its distinctive wartime appearance. Interior examination reveals traces of the original leather sweatband, though it has deteriorated heavily over time and is now largely absent due to its delicate condition. The interior of the sweatband is marked size “56,” although the marking could not be photographed because of the fragile state of the remaining leather. Stitching patterns from the original insignia placement are visible beneath the wool lining, further supporting the originality and period construction of the piece.
Condition is very good overall considering the rarity and delicate nature of these fezzes. The exterior wool shows honest age, light wear, and scattered handling marks consistent with wartime use and long-term storage. The leather sweatband is heavily damaged and mostly gone, with remaining fragments exhibiting cracking and deterioration. Despite this, the fez displays exceptionally well and remains a highly desirable original example of Waffen SS Handschar headgear.
