Original German WWII War Merit Cross Second Class With Swords (Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwertern) - RepairedAn original German WWII War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords, complete with its original ribbon. Instituted in October 1939, the War Merit Cross with Swords was awarded to military personnel and civilians for meritorious service contributing to the German war effort under combat or combat-related conditions where bravery sufficient for the Iron Cross was not demonstrated.
The medal features the classic cross design with crossed swords between the arms and a central swastika to the obverse. The reverse is dated “1939,” signifying the institution date of the award. This example is unmarked, which is not uncommon for wartime production pieces.
The bronze finish remains well preserved with an attractive age patina and light handling wear. Details to both the wreath and swords remain crisp and well defined. The original suspension ring appears to have broken away at some point in its history, and a small hole was subsequently drilled directly through the top arm of the cross as a repair or field expedient modification for continued wear. The included original ribbon retains strong color and remains in very good condition overall.
Despite the repaired suspension area, this piece still presents well and remains in overall good condition.
