Original German WWII War Merit Cross First Class With Swords By Kerbach & Öesterhelt With Case

This is an original German WWII War Merit Cross First Class with Swords (Kriegsverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse mit Schwertern), complete with its original presentation case. The award was instituted to recognize acts of bravery or meritorious service in a combat-related role not qualifying for the Iron Cross.

The cross is constructed of zinc and features the correct eight-pointed design with a pebbled surface texture. The obverse displays the central swastika encircled by an oakleaf wreath, with crossed swords between the arms signifying combatant service. The reverse is plain, retaining its original vertical pinback assembly with a barrel-style hinge, tapered pin, and round catch.

The reverse of the pin is clearly maker marked “62,” identifying Kerbach & Öesterhelt, Gablonz, a well-known and respected wartime manufacturer. The original silvered finish has largely toned away, consistent with zinc-based construction and long-term aging rather than active wear. The badge exhibits an even, undisturbed patina throughout, with no evidence of postwar cleaning or refinishing.

The award is housed in its original black pebbled leatherette case, correctly sized for the War Merit Cross First Class. The case features a silver printed War Merit Cross with Swords emblem on the lid. The interior retains its original black velvet base and white satin lid lining. The exterior shows honest period handling and storage wear, including edge wear and light scuffing, while remaining structurally solid with an intact hinge and functioning push-button closure.

A desirable combatant version of the War Merit Cross First Class by a documented maker, offered complete with its original case—an excellent addition to any WWII German medal or award collection.
