Original German WWII Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger by Eickhorn With Hangers & Portepee
This is an original German WWII Kriegsmarine (Navy) dagger manufactured by Eickhorn of Solingen. It comes complete with hangers and portepee.
Hilt:
The hilt features an eagle pommel clutching a swastika within a wreath, along with an anchor-decorated crossguard with fluted quillon ends. The fittings retain an attractive gold-colored finish, with light age toning, scattered surface wear, and well-defined decorative detail. The blade release button is present.
Grip:
The white spiral-grooved grip has a light cream tone and retains a smooth, glossy surface. It remains in excellent condition, with no apparent cracks or chips. The twisted brass wire wrap is complete and securely seated within the grooves.
Blade:
The blade bears the “Original Eickhorn Solingen” early squirrel looking over it's shoulder trademark and features decorative etched panels on both sides, incorporating naval motifs and scrollwork. It retains a bright finish, with light surface scratches and scattered gray spotting, particularly around the etched panels. The tip comes to a well-defined, intact point, and the leather buffer washer remains present.
Scabbard:
The brass lightning bolt pattern scabbard retains clearly defined decoration, including its ornate suspension bands and both carrying rings. It shows light scratches, scattered finish wear, and areas of age toning. The scabbard remains straight, with no dings or dents.
Hangers:
The double-strap hangers feature dark ribbed fabric fronts, dark navy blue velvet backing, and decorative lion’s-head buckles. The fabric remains well preserved, with minor edge wear and a few small worn spots near the upper attachment of the shorter strap. The velvet backing retains much of its pile. The metal fittings show age toning and varying finish wear, particularly on one lower clip. One upper clasp is broken, with its spring closure missing. The chain and hook remain present.
Portepee:
Attached is a gold wire portepee with a finely woven acorn knot. The cord shows age toning, while the stem immediately above the acorn displays more pronounced darkening, wear, and loss to its metallic covering. The slider also shows wear, but the acorn retains its shape and much of its gold-colored woven finish.
The dagger, hanger and portepee show normal age and service wear, but overall remains in excellent condition.
