Original Third Reich Bahnschutzpolizei Officer’s Sleeve Eagle (Uniform Removed)

The Bahnschutzpolizei was a specialized security organization of the Third Reich responsible for guarding Germany’s railways, which were critical to military transport and wartime logistics. Administratively tied to the Deutsche Reichsbahn, these units protected railway stations, bridges, tunnels, depots, and trains from sabotage, theft, and enemy activity.

Personnel were often drawn from railway employees and older reservists, later supplemented by auxiliary forces as the war progressed. Uniforms and insignia were closely related to those of the Ordnungspolizei, with subtle distinctions specific to railway service. Original Bahnschutzpolizei items are scarcer than standard police material and are sought after by advanced collectors due to their specialized role and limited wartime production.

This is an original Bahnschutzpolizei (Railway Protection Police) officer’s sleeve eagle, executed in exceptional hand embroidery and intended for wear on the upper left sleeve of officer tunics and jackets. This pattern was worn by Bahnschutzpolizei officers in ranks ranging from Oberzugführer through Stabsführer.

The eagle is finely hand-embroidered in silver bullion and wire thread on a black wool backing. It features the correct right-facing, spread-winged eagle clutching a wreathed, mobile swastika in its talons. The embroidery displays crisp, well-defined detail throughout the wings, body, and wreath, consistent with high-quality private-purchase or tailor-made officer insignia. Distinctive off-white thread is used to outline and accent the details of the eagle. There is minor period wear and small areas of age-related damage, consistent with original use.

The reverse shows clear evidence of period uniform removal, with original stitching remnants and age-consistent backing wear. Overall, this is a scarce and desirable Bahnschutzpolizei officer insignia, far less commonly encountered than standard Ordnungspolizei eagles and highly sought after by advanced collectors of Third Reich police and railway security material in very good condition.

Comparable original Bahnschutzpolizei officer sleeve eagles of this quality are currently being offered by other dealers and websites at asking prices around $700.00, reflecting the scarcity and desirability of this insignia.
