Original German Pre-WWII HJ Aluminum Flagpole Finial (Fahnenspitze) RZM M3/27 By J.H. Schmidt Söhne
This is an original pre-WWII German aluminum flagpole finial, or Fahnenspitze, as used by the Hitler Youth and associated youth organizations. Following the introduction of newly standardized HJ, Deutsches Jungvolk, Bund Deutscher Mädel, and Jungmädel flags and pennants in 1934, this bayonet-style finial was adopted for use on flagpoles. Examples of this pattern may be seen on both HJ-Gefolgschaft and DJ-Fähnlein flags.
The finial is constructed of cast aluminum and measures approximately 36cm (14 1/8 inches) tall overall. It features a rounded, offset blade with a pronounced central fuller and an upswept quillon. The cylindrical mounting collar has an interior diameter of approximately 30mm and a hole on each side for the retaining screw that secured the finial to its pole. The mounting screw is no longer present.
A partial RZM logo and manufacturer code “M3/27” by J.H. Schmidt Söhne, are stamped near the base of the collar. The finial shows honest period use and age, including scattered scratches, surface marks, discoloration, and minor oxidation. There are no major cracks or repairs, and it remains in very good to excellent overall condition.
A difficult-to-find and impressive piece of original HJ organizational regalia.
