Original German WWII M42 No Decal Normandy Camouflaged Full Basket Chicken Wire Helmet EF66
This is an outstanding and highly desirable example of a combat-used M42 Heer helmet featuring a classic Normandy-style camouflage with a full “basket” chicken wire application. Manufactured by Emaillierwerke Fulda (EF), the shell is a desirable size 66, clearly stamped “EF66” on the interior rear skirt.
EXTERIOR
The exterior retains its original wartime-applied three-tone camouflage, consisting of ordnance tan as the base with over-sprayed brick red and green tones. The camouflage is skillfully applied over the original factory dark field-gray textured finish, producing a well-balanced and authentic pattern consistent with known Normandy theater examples.
A particularly desirable feature is the full basket chicken wire, which was applied over the camouflage for the purpose of holding foliage for additional concealment. The wire remains tightly fitted around the helmet and exhibits correct period construction. There are expected areas of wear where the wire has contacted the surface, lightly rubbing the paint down to the metal and resulting in minor surface oxidation—honest field wear that adds to the helmet’s authenticity.
In addition, a secondary reinforcing wire—appearing to be cloth-wrapped electrical-style wire—runs around and is integrated into the chicken wire assembly. This is a classic field-expedient modification, likely performed by the soldier to better secure the camouflage netting.
The shell itself displays normal service wear, including scratches, scuffs, and age-related patina, all consistent with combat use. The overall presentation remains excellent, with strong visual appeal.
INTERIOR
The interior retains a good amount of its original dark field-gray factory finish. The helmet is fitted with its original zinc liner band and pigskin leather liner. The leather shows clear signs of age, use, and darkening from service, yet remains intact. As typical of pigskin liners, it is slightly stiff but still retains a degree of suppleness. There is light surface mold present on portions of the leather, which could be carefully stabilized if desired.
The original drawstring is present and intact. The helmet also retains its original chinstrap, which shows heavy wear, dryness, and age consistent with prolonged field use, yet remains complete.
A particularly attractive and personal touch is the presence of period field modifications inside the liner. There is three brown folded paper that has been carefully folded and inserted between the outer band and inner liner band, almost certainly done by the original soldier to achieve a tighter, more secure fit.
The interior rear skirt is hand-painted with the soldier’s name in a light-toned paint, now aged to a yellowish/off-white appearance. Though worn, the name remains clearly visible and adds a strong element of personalization and history to the piece.
CONDITION
Overall, this is a textbook example of a Normandy camouflage M42 helmet with full basket chicken wire, an increasingly scarce configuration. With its untouched combat-used condition, strong visual character, and multiple period modifications, this helmet stands as a highly collectible and historically significant artifact.
