This is an attractive original Imperial German reservist beer stein belonging to a soldier named Müller, who served with the 6th Company, Leibgarde-Infanterie-Regiment (1. Großherzoglich Hessisches) Nr. 115, stationed at Darmstadt, during 1908–1910. The Leibgarde-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 115 was one of the historic Hessian guard regiments and was closely associated with the Grand Dukes of Hesse. The regiment was stationed at Darmstadt and traced its history back to 1621. Leibgarde-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 115 was part of the Grand Ducal Hessian military establishment at Darmstadt and later served on the Western Front during WWI before being dissolved following the war.
The porcelain body is decorated in the traditional Imperial German reservist style with colorful military scenes depicting soldiers during their service, training exercises, barracks life, and farewell scenes. The central decoration includes portraits, the Hessian colors and insignia, and a view identified as “Erinnerung an Darmstadt” (Remembrance of Darmstadt). There is a list of soldiers last names on both sides of the porcelain handle.
The stein is fitted with its original pewter lid featuring decorative relief work and a seated military figure finial raising a drink canteen. The pewter thumb lift is decorated with a crowned lion. The ceramic handle remains intact.
The stein remains colorful and displays very well. There is some expected age and use wear, including minor marks and discoloration. Please refer closely to the photos for the exact condition of the ceramic stein, pewter fittings, handle, and decoration. Overall this stein is in very good to excellent condition.
