Rare Original German WWII M42 Single Decal "Slate Gray" Luftwaffe NS66
This rare authentic M42 Luftwaffe single decal helmet with a slate gray paint finish is a fine example of a wartime-issued piece, retaining its original liner and showing honest signs of use and age. This helmet was most likely issued to Luftwaffe Field Divisions or possibly the Hermann Göring Division. The slate gray paint finish was introduced around early 1942 and is first commonly observed on later NS, EF, and QM manufactured helmets. This example is produced by NS (Vereinigte Deutsche Nikelwerke, Schwerte). The rear interior skirt is stamped NS66 with lot number D339.
EXTERIOR Shell: The M42 shell retains a strong amount of its original slate gray factory paint, exhibiting the distinctive smooth matte finish associated with this variant. The paint shows scattered wear, surface scratches, and areas of oxidation consistent with field use and age, particularly across the crown and upper surfaces. Despite this wear, the finish remains well preserved and evenly distributed across the helmet.
The Luftwaffe eagle decal remains present and clearly visible, showing moderate wear and age-related abrasion but retaining good definition. The off white tone of the eagle remains visible against the darker slate gray paint, giving the helmet strong display appeal.
All three original split pins are present and retaining much of their original paint with minor chipping and wear. The shell edges and the characteristic raw M42 rolled rim remain clean and well defined, with no visible distortion.
INTERIOR Shell: The interior retains much of its original factory-applied paint with typical age toning and scattered wear. The manufacturer stamp NS66 and lot number D339 remain clearly visible on the rear interior skirt.
Liner: The helmet retains its original liner with zinc liner band, all liner fingers present and marked size 59. The leather shows typical age toning, dryness, and wear but remains structurally sound. The original drawstring is still present and intact.
Chinstrap: The chinstrap is no longer present.
CONDITION Overall, this helmet remains a very attractive and scarce example of a M42 Luftwaffe single decal helmet finished in the desirable slate gray paint. The helmet retains its original paint, decal, liner with drawstring, and correct hardware. Honest wear, light oxidation, and surface scratching reflect genuine wartime use while preserving excellent display quality. A desirable and increasingly difficult-to-find Luftwaffe helmet variant for the advanced German helmet collector.
