Original German Pre-WWII M38 Fallschirmjäger Double Decal Helmet ET71
EXTERIOR
Original German pre-WWII M38 Fallschirmjäger double decal helmet retaining its apple green paint finish. The exterior exhibits scattered scratches, scrapes, and areas of paint loss consistent with service use, with more pronounced wear across the crown and along the rim. Exposed metal has developed a darkened patina. A few small white paint specks are present on the front of the helmet.
The left side retains the ET second-model Luftwaffe eagle decal, featuring the variation without the “dot” on the right wing. The eagle remains well defined despite scattered chips, scrapes, and scratches. The national Tri-color shield on the right side retains strong coloration, with scratches, small losses, and fine cracking throughout.
All four spanner bolts remain present. Two retain portions of their paint, while the other two show paint loss and exposed metal.
INTERIOR
The interior retains the majority of its apple green paint and is stamped ET71, with lot number 4199.
The helmet is fitted with a wartime replacement liner bearing a faint black ink-stamped size marking of 68/58, differing from the size 71 shell marking. The leather has darkened to a rich brown and exhibits surface wear and lighter abrasion around the perimeter. The faint black ink stamp Biedermann & Czarnikow manufacturer marking remains visible, along with the separate size marking.
The aluminum liner band retains its complete black padding, which remains in excellent condition. The Type II leather chinstrap harness is also complete and in excellent condition, showing light creasing and wear. Small white paint specks are present on the liner, with another on the chinstrap.
As part of the liner replacement, only one of the original spanner-bolt nuts was reused to secure the chinstrap harness. The securing nuts appear undisturbed, with no obvious signs of recent turning or removal.
CONDITION
Overall, an excellent service-used example of this very rare pre-WWII M38 Fallschirmjäger double decal helmet. The retained apple green finish, clearly recognizable decals, and complete Type II chinstrap harness give this helmet strong display appeal. Its wartime replacement liner is an important feature of its present configuration. A highly desirable example for collectors of German paratrooper helmets and Luftwaffe headgear.
