Original German WWII Heer (Army) Issued Krim Shield (Krimschild) Sleeve Insignia
This is an original German WWII Heer-issued Krim Shield (Krimschild), awarded to Army personnel who participated in the Crimean Campaign between September 21, 1941, and July 4, 1942. Instituted on 25 July 1942, the Krim Shield commemorated the hard-fought campaign on the Crimean Peninsula and was authorized for soldiers who met the required combat or service qualifications during the operation.
The shield is die-struck from steel and retains much of its original bronze finish, now displaying an attractive aged patina with scattered oxidation and honest period wear. The details remain well defined throughout, including the national eagle clutching the wreath and swastika, the dates "1941" and "1942", the outline of the Crimean Peninsula, and the "KRIM" banner across the center. The raised details remain crisp despite age-related finish loss, giving the shield a pleasing untouched appearance.
The shield remains mounted on its original Heer field-gray wool backing, as issued for wear on the upper left sleeve of the tunic. The backing retains its original shape and exhibits expected age, with light wear and some fraying around the edges.
The reverse still retains most of its original paper backing. As commonly encountered with combat-worn examples, the paper has become brittle over time and exhibits cracking, losses, and age-related deterioration. The original attachment prongs are visible beneath the remaining backing material, the shield remains securely mounted to its wool backing.
Overall, this is an honest, untouched Heer-issued Krim Shield that displays the character expected from an original wartime example. It would make an excellent addition to any collection of German WWII campaign awards or Heer uniform insignia.
