Original German WWII Demjansk Campaign Shield (Demjanskschild) For Heer Or Waffen SS
Awarded to German Army (Heer) and Waffen-SS personnel who participated in the defense of the Demjansk Pocket between February and April 1942, this is an original Demjansk Campaign Shield (Demjanskschild). The shield features the classic design with a national eagle above the DEMJANSK scroll, crossed swords over an aircraft, and the date 1942 at the bottom.
The shield is die-struck from magnetic steel and retains much of its original silver-gray finish with honest age and service wear. There are scattered areas of light surface oxidation and patina throughout the obverse, adding to its untouched, period appearance without detracting from the overall display.
The shield remains mounted on its original field-gray wool backing, suitable for wear by either Heer or Waffen-SS personnel. The wool backing shows expected age, with some fraying and minor damage around the edges from years of handling and wear. The reverse is missing its original paper backing, exposing the steel backplate and attachment prongs. This is a common condition encountered on original examples and suggests the shield may have been removed from a uniform during its service life or shortly thereafter.
Overall, this is a solid, untouched original Demjansk Shield with desirable field-gray wool backing, displaying honest combat-era wear and an appearance consistent with a period-worn example. A fine addition to any collection of German WWII campaign awards or Eastern Front memorabilia.
