Original German WWII Eastern Front Medal With Ribbon (Ostmedaille / Winterschlacht im Osten 1941–42) Marked 20 By Carl Friedrich ZimmermannThis is an excellent and well-preserved original Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42 (“Winter Battle in the East 1941/42”) Medal, commonly known as the “Ostmedaille.” Struck in silvered and blackened fine zinc, this example is marked 20 on the suspension ring (Pic 4, 5) for Carl Friedrich Zimmermann.
The obverse depicts a Wehrmacht eagle clutching a swastika (Hakenkreuz), surmounted by a steel helmet and stick grenade symbolizing the combined arms of the Eastern Front. The reverse is inscribed “WINTERSCHLACHT IM OSTEN 1941/42” above a crossed sword and laurel branch, representing both combat service and endurance under harsh conditions.
This medal retains its original suspension ring and comes complete with an original Ost Front ribbon, red with narrow white-black-white center stripes symbolizing blood, snow, and mourning. The finish shows attractive age patina and light wear consistent with period issue.
