This is an original German WWII Heer (Army) Officer’s Dagger manufactured by the prestigious Solingen firm Carl Eickhorn. A classic example of the standard Army officer’s sidearm, this dagger is accompanied by its original hanger and portepee, making for an attractive and complete display set.
The blade remains in excellent condition, retaining a bright finish with very nice overall presentation. It still exhibits a good amount of the original crossgrain finish, a desirable feature appreciated by collectors. There are a few very light gray spots from age and storage, but these are minor and do not detract from the dagger's appearance. The etched squirrel trademark along with the "Original Eickhorn Solingen" marking remains crisp, sharp, and clearly defined.
The fittings are constructed of zinc alloy and retain their original plating with a pleasing, even age patina throughout. The detailing to the pommel, ferrule, and other fittings remains sharp and well defined, displaying the quality craftsmanship associated with Eickhorn production. The crossguard is a replacement and is not an original Carl Eickhorn-produced component, though it blends well with the overall appearance of the dagger.
The grip is the highly desirable orange Trylon type and remains in excellent condition. It is free from cracks, chips, or significant damage and retains a rich, vibrant coloration while displaying only light age-related wear.
The steel-based Eickhorn scabbard retains its attractive pebbled finish and original plating. It remains free from dents and shows only light, honest wear from age and handling. The throat retaining screw remains intact and appears unturned, further enhancing the integrity of the piece.
Included is the original Heer dagger hanger, which displays attractive age patina and honest wear consistent with wartime service and long-term storage. The fittings remain sound, and the hanger presents very well overall. The accompanying portepee shows expected age and wear, including some light corrosion in areas, but remains complete and displays nicely when mounted on the dagger.
Overall, this is a very attractive and honest Carl Eickhorn Heer Officer’s Dagger set featuring an excellent orange Trylon grip, a strong Eickhorn-marked blade with retained crossgrain, original hanger and portepee, and pleasing age patina throughout. It would make a fine addition to any advanced German edged weapons collection.
