Original German WWII Kriegsgefangene (Prisoner of War) Zinc Identification Disk Of Stalag VII A

This is an original German WWII Kriegsgefangene (Prisoner of War) identification disk, issued at Stalag VII A, one of the largest German POW camps of the Second World War. Stalag VII A was located at Moosburg, Bavaria, and held Allied prisoners from numerous nations, including American, British, French, Soviet, and other Allied forces.

The disk is constructed of zinc, oval in form, and retains the correct three horizontal break slots and central dividing perforation, allowing the tag to be broken in half if required for record-keeping purposes. The disk is clearly stamped on both halves:
  • “Stalag VII A” – identifying the POW camp of issue
  • Prisoner number: “538” – repeated on both halves, as per regulations
The reverse is plain, showing the expected factory finish and age-related oxidation typical of zinc POW tags. The stamping remains legible despite surface wear.

Condition is consistent with wartime use and long-term storage, exhibiting oxidation, surface corrosion, and honest age wear. No cleaning or restoration has been performed. Overall, it remains a solid and authentic example with clear markings.

Stalag VII A was liberated by U.S. forces in April 1945 and is historically significant due to the sheer number of prisoners processed through the camp. Original POW identification disks from this camp are increasingly collectible and offer strong historical context.

A genuine and desirable WWII POW artifact, suitable for advanced German WWII, POW, or Allied captivity collections in very good condition.
