Original German WWII Kriegsmarine Destroyer Badge By Schwerin
An original German WWII Kriegsmarine Destroyer War Badge (Zerstörerkriegsabzeichen) by Schwerin of Berlin, a desirable wartime manufacturer well known for producing high-quality naval awards.
Instituted on June 4, 1940, the Destroyer Badge was awarded to Kriegsmarine destroyer crews for participation in combat operations, including naval engagements, escort duties, mine laying operations, and the Norwegian Campaign. The design features a detailed destroyer cutting through heavy seas, surrounded by a gilt oak leaf wreath surmounted by the national eagle and swastika.
This example retains very good overall detail with strong definition to the destroyer, waves, and wreath. The original gilt finish to the wreath remains well preserved with attractive age patina and light wear from period use. The reverse retains its original vertical pin, hinge, and catch assembly.
The reverse is maker marked “SCHWERIN BERLIN 68,” identifying production by Wilhelm Deumer’s contemporary competitor Schwerin of Berlin. The hardware setup and construction are consistent with wartime Schwerin manufacture.
A desirable and attractive Kriegsmarine combat badge that would make an excellent addition to any German naval or WWII award collection.
