A scarce and interesting example of a German WWII Luftschutz beaded M35 helmet, produced by Emaillierwerke Fulda (EF) in size 64. This helmet retains its distinctive factory-applied beaded edge, a feature specific to early Luftschutz configurations utilizing modified M35 shells.
The helmet exterior shows clear evidence of period use and reissue modification. The shell was originally finished in Luftschutz blue, which remains visible on the interior. At some point, the exterior appears to have been overpainted in black, likely for reissue or civil defense reuse. Additionally, the helmet shows remnants of a whitewashed finish, still visible in scattered areas across the shell. This whitewash was likely field-applied for camouflage or winter use, though it is more commonly associated with military service rather than standard Luftschutz issue.
The front retains a Luftschutz-style decal, which appears to have been reapplied after repainting, showing wear consistent with the helmet’s overall condition.
The shell itself remains structurally sound, with typical surface wear, scattered oxidation, and patina throughout. All rivets and vent holes are intact, and the beaded edge remains well defined.
The interior retains its original liner band and leather liner. The leather is very dry but still somewhat supple, with approximately half of the liner fingers damaged or missing. The original drawstring is no longer present. The chinstrap is missing, having likely deteriorated and separated over time due to age, dryness, and storage conditions.
The interior apron shows faint but visible markings, including the EF size stamp consistent with production. The original Luftschutz blue paint remains visible inside the shell, providing strong contrast to the altered exterior.
Overall, this is a well-used and character-rich example of a Luftschutz beaded M35 helmet, showing multiple layers of service life and adds an intriguing aspect to the helmet’s story and visual appeal.
