Original German WWII 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger By SMF
This is an excellent original example of the German WWII 2nd Model Luftwaffe Officer's Dagger, manufactured by the highly desirable maker SMF (Solinger Metallwaren-Fabrik), Solingen. Introduced in 1937, the 2nd Model Luftwaffe dagger became the standard dress sidearm for Luftwaffe officers and remained in service throughout the Second World War. Featuring its elegant design, distinctive orange grip, and finely detailed fittings, it remains one of the most iconic edged weapons of the Third Reich era.
The dagger retains an attractive overall appearance and exhibits excellent eye appeal throughout. The aluminum pommel displays the traditional Luftwaffe swas within a wreath and remains sharply detailed with minimal wear. The orange grip is vibrant in color and retains its original twisted wire wrap. As commonly encountered with period grips, there are a few age-related cracks present, including one near the upper front portion of the grip and another near the lower rear area. Despite these imperfections, the grip remains solid and presents very well.
The aluminum crossguard features the classic outstretched Luftwaffe eagle clutching a swas and retains crisp detail throughout. All fittings exhibit a pleasing, matching appearance and natural age patina.
The blade remains in very good to excellent condition, retaining much of its original bright finish. The obverse ricasso is etched with the desirable SMF Solingen king logo maker mark. The blade also bears a Luftwaffe Waffenamt WaA5 inspection stamp, adding an extra level of collectability. There are a few scattered gray spots and minor age marks visible on the reverse side of the blade, but these do little to detract from the overall presentation. The blade remains straight, clean, and highly attractive.
The dagger's original airplane gray-plated steel scabbard has a very minor rust patina and has the characteristic pebble-grain texture with sharply defined oak leaf and acorn motifs. The scabbard is completely free of dents, bends, or significant damage. Both original headless retaining screws remain present, intact, and appear untouched. The aluminum hanger bands are beautifully detailed and match the crossguard and pommel.
Overall, this is a highly attractive and honest example of a German WWII 2nd Model Luftwaffe Officer's Dagger by SMF, featuring an excellent blade with a desirable Waffenamt inspection mark, and only minor grip cracking typical of these daggers. A collector-grade example that would make a nice addition to any Luftwaffe or German edged weapons collection.
