Original German WWII M40 Single Decal Heer Helmet Q64
EXTERIOR
Original German WWII M40 combat helmet manufactured by Quist in a size 64 shell. The exterior retains a worn dark fieldgray finish with scattered scratches, abrasions, paint loss, and areas of oxidation. A crack is present in the rear skirt.
We have listed this helmet as a Heer (Army) single decal example; however, the heavily worn decal remnants leave its identification uncertain. They may possibly represent an SS decal applied to the left side rather than its usual position on the right. The wear appears consistent with service use, although this alone does not establish when the decal was applied. A subsequently applied Pocher type SS decal is one possibility, but neither the identification nor the application date can be confirmed.
INTERIOR
The interior retains a good amount of its dark fieldgray paint, with a soldier’s name written in white paint. The Q64 maker and shell-size marking, together with the lot number, is located at the rear of the interior skirt. Based on the lot number and marking placement, this helmet was originally produced without a decal, whether intended for Heer or Waffen SS use.
The leather liner is complete and slightly stiff, but retains some suppleness. The drawstring is missing. A European-made leather chinstrap is fitted.
CONDITION
A well-worn example showing age, use, and oxidation, with a complete leather liner, missing drawstring, and a crack in the rear skirt. Offered as a Heer helmet with an uncertain decal identification, rather than as a confirmed Waffen SS example.
