Original German WWII Polizei (Police) Pre War M31 Breadbag (Modified)
This is an original pre-war German Polizei (Police) M31 breadbag that was field-modified during its service life. Constructed of heavy green canvas with aluminum hardware, it features the desirable pre-war configuration. The maker's mark is still present on the inside of the flap.
At some point during or shortly after the war, the breadbag was altered by removing the top belt loops and center belt hook. A pair of D-rings remain at the top, strongly suggesting that a shoulder strap was attached so the breadbag could be carried as a shoulder pouch rather than worn on the belt. This type of modification is commonly encountered on German equipment used by prisoners of war, who often adapted their issued gear for everyday use while in captivity. While it is impossible to document the exact history of this example, the modification is entirely consistent with known POW alterations.
The interior retains its original pocket with aluminum buttons, and the canvas remains solid with honest service wear throughout. The leather fittings show age with some dryness and light surface cracking. The center closure strap broke during use and was period repaired with heavy thread. One of the front closure straps has broken away and is no longer present.
Overall in good condition considering age and immediate post war modification.
