Original German WWII War Merit Cross 1st Class With Swords 1st Class Damaged

This is an original German WWII War Merit Cross 1st Class with Swords (Kriegsverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse mit Schwertern), manufactured from zinc, a material commonly used during the later war years due to strategic shortages of higher-grade metals. The obverse retains well-defined details throughout, with the pebbled finish remaining visible on the arms of the cross and the crossed swords sharply executed beneath the central medallion. The finish has naturally toned with age, displaying an attractive dark gray patina consistent with original zinc examples.

The reverse tells the story of a period repair. At some point during its service life, the original pin, hinge, and catch assembly were removed or broken off, and a replacement pin assembly was soldered to the reverse. The repair appears to have age and patina consistent with the badge, suggesting it was carried out many years ago rather than being a recent restoration. The replacement pin appears to be period type, remains functional, allowing the decoration to be displayed or worn. Evidence of the solder work, along with areas of oxidation and age-related wear, is clearly visible on the reverse.

Although no longer in collector-grade condition due to the altered hardware, this remains an authentic wartime War Merit Cross 1st Class with Swords that exhibits honest age and a period modification likely made to extend its usable life. It would make an affordable addition to a German WWII medal collection, especially for collectors seeking original wartime pieces with character and history.

Condition: Good overall. Original zinc construction with attractive age patina. Obverse remains crisp with light wear. Original reverse hardware has been removed and replaced with a period-soldered pin assembly. The replacement pin functions properly. Visible solder residue, oxidation, and age-related wear are present on the reverse, as shown.
