Original Pre-WWII Heer Artillery Band Leader’s Swallow’s Nest with Fringe (Matching Pair)
A matching pair of original Heer Artillery musician’s Schwalbennester (swallow’s nests), executed in the correct red wool backing with applied silver tresse and complete with original silver bullion fringe. These are the distinctive shoulder ornaments worn by Heer band leaders and senior musicians.
Both pieces retain their original feldgrau cotton backing, securely stitched in place, showing honest age toning and scattered staining consistent with period use and long-term storage. Each swallow’s nest was originally fitted with five attachment hooks: one example retains all five hooks intact, while the second retains two, with two broken and one missing.
There is minor moth tracking to the red wool visible between the applied tresse on both pieces, along with light overall age-related toning to the metal bullion and fringe. The silver fringe remains largely intact on both examples, retaining good length and texture with only light disturbance.
Despite the noted flaws, this is a very attractive and authentic matched pair, displaying excellent period character and clear originality. A scarce Heer musician’s insignia set, offered complete and sold as a pair.
