Original Imperial German WWI M17 Helmet With Liner Band Size 66
An original Imperial German WWI Model 1917 steel helmet, size 66, retaining its original liner band and showing honest service wear throughout. A solid, untouched example that displays well and offers both collector and restoration potential.
EXTERIOR
The helmet retains approximately 75% or more of its original factory field-gray finish, now naturally aged to a darker, brownish-green tone in areas. The surface shows expected wartime wear, including scattered abrasions, paint loss, and areas of surface oxidation, all consistent with age and use. The shell maintains a pleasing, uncleaned appearance with no signs of post-war refinishing.
All three split pins remain intact and firmly set, with only minor paint loss present. Vent lugs are correct for the M17 pattern and remain undisturbed.
INTERIOR
The interior retains approximately 50% of its original paint, with visible areas of surface rust, most notably in the dome, likely the result of long-term storage conditions where moisture settled inside the shell. The oxidation appears stable and typical for a helmet of this age.
Importantly, the original metal liner band and split pins are present, a desirable feature for collectors and those considering restoration. The leather liner itself is no longer present. No visible maker stamp could be identified.
CONDITION
