Original Russian WWII M36 Soviet SSh-36 Steel Helmet Size 1
Offered here is an original Soviet SSh-36 steel combat helmet, introduced for the Red Army in 1936. A limited number of SSh-36 helmets were supplied by the Soviet Union to Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) as part of Soviet military assistance to the Spanish Republic.
Based on its configuration and interior, this example was most likely one of the helmets distributed to Republican forces in Spain and subsequently refurbished. The helmet has been repainted gray and retains its cloth liner system, corrugated metal liner band and cloth chinstrap. It is a Size 1.
The large red outlined star with hammer & sickle presently on the front was added post-WWII and is not being represented as an original Spanish Civil War or wartime Soviet marking.
The helmet shows honest age and service wear with scattered scratches, scuffs and minor finish loss. The liner and chinstrap also exhibit age and use, including some fraying to the chinstrap.
Overall, a very interesting example of the distinctive and increasingly difficult-to-find Soviet SSh-36 helmet, most likely associated with Republican use during the Spanish Civil War. Please refer to the photos for additional details and actual condition.
