Original Third Reich HJ Knife Transitional RZM M7/27 (1939) By Puma
This is an original transitional period HJ knife produced by Puma-Werk Lauterjung & Sohn, Solingen, dated 1939. As typical of this transitional phase, the blade is dual-marked, featuring the early Puma trademark (Puma head within a diamond with “Puma Solingen Ges. Geschützt”) along with the RZM code M7/27 and date 1939 on the reverse ricasso.
The blade shows honest service wear, including surface scratches, runner marks, and areas of age toning. The edge remains intact, and the markings are still very visible with slightly softened from use.
The grip plates are the standard black checkered type and remain in very good condition. The HJ diamond insignia is intact, well-fitted, and shows light age wear. The nickel-plated hilt fittings retain a bright appearance with light patina and handling marks consistent with age.
The scabbard has lost most of its original black enamel finish, now showing a worn zinc gray surface with scattered oxidation and finish loss, particularly near the throat.
The leather hanger is present and complete but worn. The leather shows significant finish loss, dryness, and surface deterioration from age and use. Importantly, the retaining strap is present and intact, and the snap is still in place, though it shows corrosion and wear.
Overall, this is a solid and correct example of a 1939 transitional Puma HJ knife, clearly displaying both early trademark and RZM markings. While showing honest age and field wear, it remains a desirable collectible from the transitional period.
