Original German WWII War Merit Cross First Class With Swords Marked 52 By C.F. Zimmermann With Case
This is an original German WWII War Merit Cross 1st Class with Swords (Kriegsverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse mit Schwertern), manufactured by C.F. Zimmermann of Pforzheim.
The cross appears to be constructed of zinc and features finely pebbled arms, crossed swords and a central swastika surrounded by an oak-leaf wreath. The plain reverse is equipped with a vertical pin, barrel hinge and retaining catch. The pin is clearly marked “52,” the maker code assigned to C.F. Zimmermann.
The cross now has an overall gray appearance. It is uncertain whether it was originally issued without a silver finish or whether the finish has faded or been absorbed into the zinc over time. The details remain crisp, and the pin and catch are intact.
Included is its black presentation case, featuring an image of the War Merit Cross with Swords on the lid. The case displays considerable age and exterior wear, including finish loss, scuffs and worn edges. The interior lining shows staining and age, while the black medal bed is heavily worn and deteriorated where the cross rested, with areas of missing fabric and exposed padding.
Overall, the medal is in very good condition, while the case shows considerable age and wear.
