Original Pre-WWII German Cycling Club Banner & Pennant – “Rad Sp. Cl. Sturmvogel” Köln 1930 - U.S. Veteran BringbackOffered is an original handmade German pre-WWII cycling club banner and accompanying pennant dating to 1930.
The larger banner is beautifully constructed in royal blue velvet with heavy gold bullion embroidery and fringe. The center displays the historic coat of arms of Cologne. It reads “Rad Sp. Cl. Sturmvogel Köln – 1930” (Cycling Sports Club ‘Storm Bird’ Cologne – 1930). 3 out of 4 of its original hanging ties are still intact. Most of the fringe is still intact, too. The reverse side of the banner reads “Mit Herz und Wort! Treu deinem Sport!” (With Heart and Word! Faithful to Your Sport!). The large black bird above the wheel appears to symbolize the club name “Sturmvogel” (“Storm Bird”). Overall in very good to excellent condition.
Also included is a smaller embroidered pennant “Renn u. Wander Club Sturmvogel Köln 1930” (Racing and Touring Club Sturmvogel Cologne 1930”). The reverse side displays the shield from the Cologne coat of arms. The hanging tabs are intact and the fringe along the top and bottom are mostly intact. Overall there is some major fraying throughout due to age and lacking proper storage.
Despite obvious flaws, the banners remain highly displayable with excellent visual appeal and strong pre-war German sports club character.
Banner measures approximately 22" x 22" (56cm x 56cm). Small pennant measures approximately 8" x 6" (20cm x 15cm). Sold as a set. U.S. WWII Veteran bringback.
