Original German WWII German Eagle Order Medal of Merit With Swords
Original German WWII Medal of Merit of the Order of the German Eagle with Swords (Deutsche Verdienstmedaille des Deutschen Adlerordens mit Schwertern). Instituted as part of the Order of the German Eagle, this decoration was primarily presented to foreign nationals for services rendered to Germany. The crossed swords indicated an award for military related merit or service, while examples without swords recognized civilian or diplomatic service.
The obverse features a large Maltese style cross surrounded by four German national eagles clutching swastikas. The reverse bears the three-line inscription “DEUTSCHE VERDIENST MEDAILLE,” translating to “German Medal of Merit.” A detailed pair of crossed swords forms the suspension above the medal.
The medal remains in excellent overall condition, displaying attractive age toning and excellent detail throughout the cross, eagles, swords, and lettering. The accompanying ribbon is an original period ribbon and closely resembles the proper issue pattern; however, it is not the correct ribbon for this medal. The proper ribbon for the swords version would include an additional narrow white stripe running down its center.
Overall, this is a very well preserved example of a desirable German diplomatic and military merit award for foreign nationals.
