Original German WWII Kriegsmarine M40 Tropical Field Cap Dated 1942 Size 56

Original German WWII Kriegsmarine M40 Tropical Field Cap Dated 1942 Size 56

In late 1940, tropical uniforms, headgear, and equipment were developed and issued to Deutsches Afrika Korps (DAK) personnel in preparation for the North African campaign and the Mediterranean theater.

Original German WWII Kriegsmarine enlisted man’s M40 tropical field cap constructed from tan-colored ribbed cotton twill. The cap is fully lined in contrasting dark green ribbed cotton, a characteristic feature associated with original Kriegsmarine tropical headgear.

The front retains its separate-pattern tropical Kriegsmarine BeVo woven insignia. The national eagle is applied with zigzag machine stitching, while the national cockade is secured with straight machine stitching. Both insignia display attractive age toning consistent with the cap.

Each side is fitted with two metal grommeted ventilation openings. The interior is clearly stamped with the manufacturer’s information, “Franz Ritter vorm. Carl Roth Detlingen,” along with the date “1942” and size “56.”.

This cap appears to have been service worn and exhibits honest period use, including scattered soiling, discoloration, and light wear to the exterior and lining. Despite this, it remains in excellent overall condition, retaining a pleasing shape, strong stitching, and well-preserved insignia. A desirable and attractive original 1942 dated Kriegsmarine tropical field cap.
