Original German WWII M40 Single Decal Heer Camouflaged Wired Helmet Q66
Original German WWII M40 Single Decal Heer Camouflaged Wire Helmet Q66
EXTERIOR
This is an original German WWII M40 Single Decal Heer (Army) helmet, manufactured by Quist in size Q66, retaining its original wartime-applied camouflage finish and combat wire. The helmet features a dark field-gray base coat that has been overpainted with a heavy textured camouflage finish, consisting of coarse sand mixed into the paint to reduce glare and improve concealment. Large irregular ordnance tan camouflage splotches were then applied over the textured base, creating an attractive and unmistakable battlefield appearance.
The original combat wire remains securely in place around the helmet. Notably, the wire was already installed when the ordnance tan camouflage was applied, as evidenced by traces of the tan paint still adhering to portions of the wire. This is an excellent indication that the wire and camouflage have remained together since wartime use. Several of the original split pins have become loose over time, with one serving as an attachment point that helps retain the combat wire in its present configuration.
Originally issued as a single decal Heer helmet, the decal has been largely covered by the camouflage paint, although a small portion of the national eagle and swastika can still be seen peeking through the finish. The helmet displays honest combat wear and age throughout while maintaining outstanding eye appeal.
INTERIOR
The interior retains approximately 98% of its original factory-applied paint, which contrasts nicely with the weathered exterior camouflage finish. The original liner band remains in place, although the leather liner has deteriorated into fragments due to prolonged poor storage conditions. No chinstrap is present. The shell is stamped Q66 with lot number 373.
A particularly desirable feature is the soldier's surname, "Flaum," hand-painted in white on the rear interior skirt near the lot number.
CONDITION
Overall, this is an exceptional untouched combat-used Heer camouflage helmet displaying all the characteristics collectors seek in an original field applied camouflage example. The heavy textured finish, original combat wire, partially visible Heer decal beneath the camouflage, personalized interior marking, and matching Quist shell combine to create an outstanding display piece.
Despite the deteriorated liner and missing chinstrap, the helmet remains a highly desirable example of an original wartime camouflaged M40 Heer wire helmet that exhibits tremendous originality, character, and combat history.
