Original US WWI M1917 “Doughboy” Helmet Marked ZB With Liner & ChinstrapThis is an original US Model 1917 steel helmet, commonly referred to as the “Doughboy” helmet, as issued during WWI. The iconic Brodie-style shell was the standard helmet for American troops in 1917–1918. This example retains its original steel construction with the classic wide brim and ventilation/attachment holes along the rim. It is marked "ZB" on the rim confirming production by Zenith Brown, a known US contractor for WWI helmets.
The helmet retains its original rough texture finish, showing honest age, field wear, and light surface oxidation consistent with its age. The finish remains stable with no major structural damage noted. Someone did scratched a couple of letters into the textured finish in front, but hardly noticeable. The helmet might have been or slightly camouflaged at one time.
The interior retains its original complete liner with done felt padding and netted crown support. The liner shows age and wear, with minor fraying to the netting, but remains intact and complete. The original leather chinstrap is slightly dry, but nicely intact.
Overall the helmet that is over one hundred years old is complete and in very good condition.
